Modeled at 1:22.5 scale, G scale was introduced by Ernst Paul Lehmann Patentwerk under their brand name of LGB, and was meant for both indoor and outdoor use. It is DC powered. Lehman is the major European manufacturer of G scale trains and due to their unique construction with materials that can be used outdoors made garden railways popular. Their trains are sold as the Lehmann Gross Bahn (or "Lehmann Big Road"). Lehman Patentwerk was founded in 1881 and started producing LGB in 1968. Today it produces models of European and US originals, of steam, diesel and electric prototypes as well as a large range of coaches, freight cars, track, and accessories. G Scale is also some times referred to as #1 Gauge; the gauge (distance between the rails) is the same, a scale 3’ 3-3/8”. American G Scale manufacturers however typically model their trains a bit larger, around 1:20 based on the US narrow gauge of 3’. Marklin makes an extremely nice line of #1 gauge trains that are all metal – not well suited for the garden!
