MTH 30-2755-1 Chicago Bicentennial 4-Car 6200 Subway SetPS

This is a MTH 30-2755-1 Chicago Bicentennial 4-Car 6200 Subway SetPS. In the mid-1940s, Chicago's public transit system was in a dismal state, with much of its equipment dating back to the turn of the century. In April 1945, the Chicago Transit Authority was created as a government agency to take over and run all the privately owned elevated (L) and streetcar operations. One of the CTA's first acts was to order 130 new 6000-series cars to replace older equipment. Eventually the 6000-series grew to 720 cars delivered from 1950-1959, the largest series of cars ever built for the CTAr and, for many, the classic symbol of Chicago's L. The 6000's were the first large series of L cars with a feature borrowed from the North Shore's Electroliners (shown elsewhere in this catalog): curved sides that were narrow at the floor to accommodate L platforms and wider at the window line to give passengers more room. The 6000's also borrowed much of their electrical technology from the PCC streetcar de

MTH 30-2756-1 Metropolitan T Green LO-V 4-Car Subway

This is an MTH 30-2756-1 Metropolitan LO-V 4-Car Subway Set with Proto-Sound 2.0, Car #'s motor 5466, trailers 4902,4912,5378. As the IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit) subway expanded in New York City, the need for additional equipment prompted the ordering of 600 low voltage type motor cars. One hundred of these cars came from Pullman in 1916 and 1917, while the remaining 500 were purchased from American Car and Foundry in 1924. An additional 510 non-powered trailer cars entered service between 1916 and 1922. Typical of subway equipment of their day, the steel-sided cars featured rattan seating and rather dim overhead lighting. The LO-V cars, as the low voltage equipment came to be known, used a low voltage controller, or throttle, to control the high voltage that actually powered the car. This marked a dramatic improvement in safety for the motorman, who in previous HI-V cars had his hand on a controller directly connected to 600 volts of direct current on the third rail. The LO-V c

MTH 30-2759-1 Q Type 3-Car Subway Set w/ PS 2

This is a MTH 30-2759-1 Q Type 3-Car Subway Set w/ PS 2.In the late 1930s, the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation rebuilt 90 turn-of-the-century wooden elevated cars for service to the 1939-40 World's Fair. Steel ends replaced the original open wood platforms and the BMT shops installed new doors and control systems. The cars were semi-permanently coupled into three-car sets, with two motorized units flanking an unpowered trailer. The Q (for Queens) cars served on the Flushing Line until 1949 and the following year began a new career on the Third Avenue Elevated. Like the proverbial phoenix, the cars - now more than half a century old - began yet another life in 1957, when they were moved to the Myrtle Avenue Elevated. When the Q-Types were finally retired in 1969, the oldest cars had been in continuous service for 66 years - the longest career of any New York City transit car. Today you can see a preserved Q-Type in the New York Transit Museum, the only rail museum in America loc

MTH 30-2890-1 RIO GRANDE SOUTHERN GALLOPING GOOSE DIESEL W/PROTO

This is a MTH 30-2890-1 RIO GRANDE SOUTHERN GALLOPING GOOSE DIESEL W/PROTO. Like the doodlebugs before them and the RDC (Rail Diesel Car) after them, the Rio Grande Southern's Galloping Geese were a cheap way to provide passenger service. Cobbled together in the early 1930s by a railroad on the verge of bankruptcy, the Geese replaced steam-powered passenger trains and enabled the RGS to provide passenger and tourist service in the Colorado Rockies until it closed in 1952. The poor condition of RGS track gave the Motors, as they were officially called, the galloping gait that prompted their nickname. Goose No. 4 was constructed in 1931 with a 1926 Pierce-Arrow engine and car body for passengers, and a homebuilt box in the back for mail and express freight. After World War II, she received a new Wayne school bus body and a war surplus GMC engine, and her freight body was converted to provide additional tourist seating. She survives today on display in Telluride, Colorado. To view a pho
